Baptism

It is a picture… 
Baptism is a visual picture of what Jesus Christ did for us. Jesus died on the cross, was buried, then rose from the dead after three days – the act of baptism (being dunked fully under water and then coming back up out of the water) symbolises ‘burying’ our old way of life and starting a new one. Getting baptised doesn’t make you a Christian; it shows that you already believe.

It’s also about making a statement… 
In getting baptised we follow Jesus’ example. Before Jesus started his ‘ministry’ here on earth he got baptised, and as he came out of the water '… a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love...”' (Matthew 3: 17) A statement was being made as to who Jesus is. Similarly for us, as we get baptised we are making a statement about who we are and whose we are. We are showing God we are serious in our commitment to Him. And in getting baptised, we are also making a statement to our friends, family and church, about who we are and what we believe.

It is part of a journey…
Being a Christian and having a relationship with God is a journey – we never ‘arrive’ or have it all ‘figured out’!  Baptism is an important part of this journey. 
You can be baptised when you have made a commitment to Jesus and are ready to take the next step in your relationship with Him. You do not have to be perfect and feel like you have everything ‘sorted’ to get baptised, neither does getting baptised make you perfect! 
Baptism is an exciting part of moving forward in our relationship with God, it is an event that we love to celebrate together as a church family.
